The power supply situation in Luzon and Visayas has returned to normal after several days of yellow and red alerts, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Many residents experienced rotating brownouts earlier this week because of power shortages caused by forced outages in several power plants and rising electricity demand during the hot weather.

In an advisory released Saturday morning, NGCP confirmed that the Luzon and Visayas grids are now operating under normal conditions. The update gave relief to many consumers who were affected by temporary power interruptions over the past few days.

Based on NGCP monitoring at 6 a.m., the Luzon grid had an available capacity of 15,799 megawatts (MW) while peak demand reached only 12,107 MW. This means the region currently has enough reserve power to support consumer demand.

According to NGCP, the improvement in the power supply happened after several power plants returned to full operation. These included GNPD 1 with 668 MW, EERI 2 with 422 MW, and EERI 3 with 420 MW. Together, these facilities added 1,510 MW back into the Luzon grid.

The grid operator explained that the additional reserve power, combined with lower weekend electricity demand, helped stabilize the situation. Because of the surplus capacity in Luzon, excess electricity was also exported to the Visayas grid to help maintain stable operations there.

Why the Power Supply Improved

Several factors helped improve the power supply condition in Luzon and Visayas after days of unstable operations.

Some of the main reasons include:

  • Major power plants resumed operations
  • Weekend electricity demand became lower
  • Reserve power increased in Luzon
  • Luzon exported excess power to Visayas
  • No additional major outages were reported

NGCP said these developments helped ease the pressure on the country’s power system. The return of major generating units significantly improved the available electricity supply.

Situation in the Visayas Grid

The Visayas grid also showed stable conditions on Saturday morning. NGCP reported that the region had an available capacity of 2,768 MW against a peak demand of 2,339 MW.

Because of the available reserve power, the region was able to operate normally without needing additional emergency measures. NGCP also confirmed that the Mindanao grid remained under normal conditions.

The recent improvement is important because many areas in Luzon and Visayas experienced rotating brownouts earlier this week. Several businesses and households were affected by temporary outages that interrupted normal daily activities.

Effects of the Recent Power Supply Problems

The recent power supply shortage was mainly caused by the combination of forced outages in several power plants and increased electricity demand during the hot dry season.

Many consumers used cooling appliances for longer hours because of extreme temperatures. This caused electricity demand to rise quickly across different regions.

Some of the effects experienced by consumers included:

  • Rotating brownouts in several areas
  • Temporary business interruptions
  • Slower internet and communication services
  • Delays in work and daily activities
  • Concerns about possible longer outages

The situation raised concerns among residents and business owners, especially during peak hours when electricity demand was highest.

NGCP Continues Monitoring

Although the power supply situation is now stable, NGCP said monitoring will continue in case unexpected problems occur. The grid operator warned that another sudden increase in electricity demand or additional unplanned outages may still affect the stability of the power system. NGCP said the power situation this weekend is expected to remain stable unless major facilities encounter new technical problems. Energy officials are also closely watching the condition of power plants as temperatures remain high in many parts of the country.

Experts said stable operations are important to prevent another round of yellow or red alerts. Maintaining enough reserve power is also necessary to support both residential and commercial electricity needs.

The latest update from NGCP gave assurance to consumers that the country’s major grids are currently operating properly. Many residents are hoping the stable power supply condition will continue in the coming days to avoid more interruptions.

The recent situation also showed the importance of reliable power plants and proper reserve capacity in maintaining stable electricity services nationwide. For more updated news Visit Metro Balita PH.
