A massive Meralco Power Outage affected nearly one million customers on Wednesday evening after the Luzon power grid was placed under red alert due to low power reserves. Thousands of homes and businesses across several provinces experienced rotating brownouts that lasted around two to three hours.

The power interruptions happened after multiple power plants suddenly went offline, causing more than 3,000 megawatts of electricity capacity to become unavailable. Because of this, the NGCP implemented manual load dropping (MLD), also known as rotational brownouts, to protect the power grid from total collapse.

Meralco immediately released updates regarding the situation as affected residents waited for power restoration in different areas.

What Caused the Meralco Power Outage?

The Meralco Power Outage was triggered by the declaration of a red alert status over the Luzon grid. A red alert is issued when electricity reserves are too low to support the demand of consumers. According to reports, several power plants encountered forced outages, reducing the available electricity supply in Luzon. As demand continued to rise during the evening, the remaining reserves became insufficient.

To prevent a larger system failure, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) ordered rotational brownouts in several service areas, including locations under Meralco’s coverage.

The red alert status lasted from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m., while additional manual load dropping was still possible in some provinces later in the evening.

Areas Affected by the Rotating Brownouts

Meralco confirmed that more than 920,000 customers were affected by the temporary outages. Some areas experienced power interruptions for two to three hours before electricity was gradually restored.

The affected locations included:

  • Metro Manila
  • Batangas
  • Bulacan
  • Cavite
  • Laguna
  • Rizal

Aside from Meralco areas, other electric cooperatives across Luzon also experienced rotational brownouts.

NGCP identified additional affected locations such as:

  • Parts of La Union
  • Parts of Ilocos Sur
  • Parts of Pangasinan
  • Parts of Isabela
  • Entire province of Quirino
  • Parts of Pampanga
  • Parts of Quezon
  • Parts of Albay

The widespread outages caused inconvenience to households, businesses, offices, and commuters during peak evening hours.

Meralco Restores Thousands of Connections

Despite the large number of affected customers, Meralco said that restoration efforts immediately began after the outages occurred. As of the company’s latest update, around 270,000 customer services had already been restored. Technical teams continued monitoring the situation while coordinating with the NGCP to stabilize the power supply.

Meralco also assured the public that it was carefully managing electricity demand to avoid a total grid collapse.

The company explained that rotational brownouts are controlled and scheduled interruptions designed to protect the overall power system. Without these temporary outages, the entire Luzon grid could face a much larger blackout.

Interruptible Load Program Helps Ease Demand

To reduce pressure on the electricity grid, Meralco activated its Interruptible Load Program (ILP). Under this system, large establishments and businesses temporarily use their own generator sets instead of drawing power from the grid.

This helped reduce electricity demand by around 240 megawatts during the critical period.

Some of the businesses that usually participate in the ILP include:

  • Shopping malls
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Large commercial buildings
  • Industrial facilities

The participation of these establishments helped ease the burden on the power grid while restoration efforts continued.

Understanding Red Alert Status

A red alert status is considered the highest warning level in the power sector. It means the electricity supply is no longer enough to support consumer demand and reserve requirements.

When this happens, rotational brownouts are usually implemented to avoid a total system shutdown.

During a red alert, consumers may experience:

  • Scheduled power interruptions
  • Reduced electricity reserves
  • Delays in restoration
  • Higher risk of widespread outages

Energy experts have repeatedly warned that power plant outages and increasing electricity demand continue to challenge the country’s energy stability, especially during hot weather conditions when power consumption rises.

Public Reaction to the Meralco Power Outage

Many residents expressed frustration online after experiencing sudden power interruptions during the evening. Some households reported disrupted work, internet interruptions, and transportation problems caused by the outage. Businesses were also affected as operations slowed down due to the temporary loss of electricity.

While some areas regained power after a few hours, others remained under monitoring as authorities continued balancing the grid’s capacity. The recent Meralco Power Outage once again highlighted the importance of stable energy reserves and reliable power generation across the country. With increasing electricity demand in Luzon, concerns about future red alerts and rotational brownouts remain a major issue for consumers.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation closely in the coming days as power supply conditions stabilize. For more updates on national issues and breaking stories, stay connected with Metro Balita Ph.
