Consumers across Metro Manila and nearby provinces are expected to see higher electricity bills this month after Meralco announced a power rate increase for March 2026. The power distributor confirmed that electricity prices will go up due to higher generation and transmission charges, affecting millions of households connected to the Meralco grid.

According to Meralco, the electricity rate increased by P0.6427 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for March. This adjustment raised the overall rate for a typical household to P13.8161 per kWh, compared to P13.1734 per kWh in February 2026. The increase may seem small per kilowatt-hour, but it can significantly affect monthly bills depending on the household’s electricity consumption.

The power distributor explained that the adjustment mainly comes from increased generation and transmission costs. These charges are considered pass-through costs, meaning they are paid to power suppliers and the national grid operator rather than retained by Meralco.

How the Meralco Rate Increase Affects Household Bills

With the new electricity rate in place, many consumers will experience noticeable changes in their monthly power bills. The increase varies depending on the level of electricity consumption in a household.

Here is the estimated increase in monthly electricity bills based on typical usage:

  • 200 kWh consumption – around P129 increase
  • 300 kWh consumption – around P193 increase
  • 400 kWh consumption – around P257 increase
  • 500 kWh consumption – around P321 increase

For households consuming around 200 kWh per month, the increase of approximately P129 may already affect monthly budgeting. Families with higher electricity usage could see even larger increases in their total bill.

Reasons Behind the Meralco Power Rate Adjustment

Meralco said several factors contributed to the rate increase this March. The main drivers are higher transmission charges and generation costs.

The transmission charge for residential customers rose by P0.2880 per kWh. This increase was mainly due to a sharp rise in ancillary service charges from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). These services help stabilize the power grid and ensure reliable electricity supply, but the costs increased significantly due to higher activity in the Reserve Market.

According to Meralco, expenses from the Reserve Market accounted for nearly half of the total transmission charge for this billing period.

Meanwhile, the generation charge also increased by P0.2209 per kWh, bringing the total generation cost to P7.8607 per kWh. Generation charges represent the cost of electricity produced by power plants and supplied to the grid.

Factors Affecting the Generation Charge

Several developments in the power sector influenced the generation charge this month. Meralco explained that a fixed cost from the extension of a power purchase agreement contributed to the increase.

Key factors affecting the generation charge include:

  • Additional charges from the extended Power Purchase Agreement with First Gas-Sta. Rita
  • Contract price adjustments from power suppliers approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission
  • Changes in supply conditions in the Luzon power grid
  • Reductions in charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market

The company noted that the extension of the power purchase agreement added around P0.38 per kWh to the generation charge. However, this increase was partly offset by a P1.0952 per kWh reduction from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market as supply conditions improved.

Contract price adjustments from several power companies were also implemented after receiving approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission. These adjustments affected electricity supply agreements and contributed to overall generation costs for the month.

Other Charges and Government Contributions

Aside from generation and transmission costs, Meralco also reported a net increase of P0.1338 per kWh in other charges. These include taxes and government-mandated charges that are passed on to consumers.

The March electricity rate also reflects the implementation of a new uniform national lifeline subsidy rate of P0.01 per kWh, following a directive from the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Meralco clarified that several components of the electricity bill are remitted directly to different entities. Generation charges go to power suppliers, transmission charges are paid to the national grid operator, and taxes and subsidies are forwarded to the government.

The company also emphasized that its distribution charge has remained unchanged since August 2022, when it implemented a reduction of P0.0360 per kWh for residential customers.

Meralco Urges Consumers to Practice Energy Efficiency

As electricity costs increase, Meralco is encouraging households to adopt energy-saving practices to manage their power consumption. The company noted that electricity demand often rises during the dry season, which could further impact power supply and pricing.

To help reduce electricity usage, consumers are encouraged to follow these simple energy efficiency practices:

  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use
  • Use energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets
  • Limit the use of high-power appliances during peak hours
  • Regularly maintain appliances to ensure efficient performance

Energy conservation efforts can help households control their electricity expenses while supporting a more stable power supply across the grid.

Conclusion

The announcement from Meralco about higher electricity rates this March highlights the impact of rising generation and transmission costs on consumers. With the new rate of P13.8161 per kWh, households across the Meralco service area will likely see an increase in their monthly electricity bills depending on their energy consumption.

While many of the charges are pass-through costs paid to power suppliers and grid operators, the adjustment still affects household budgets. As demand for electricity continues to rise, especially during the dry season, consumers are encouraged to practice energy efficiency and monitor their electricity usage.

Staying informed about power rate changes can help households better prepare for adjustments in their monthly expenses and make smarter decisions about electricity consumption, according to Metro Balita Ph.
