Weather officials are warning the public to prepare for a possible Wet Christmas as a low pressure area may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility before the weekend. According to PAGASA, the weather system is being closely monitored because it could bring more rain to several parts of the country just days before Christmas.

While the disturbance is still outside PAR, its movement toward the Philippines has raised concern, especially for people planning holiday travel and outdoor activities.

Current Status of the Low Pressure Area

PAGASA reported that the low pressure area was spotted east of the country and is slowly moving closer. Forecast models show that it may cross into PAR by Friday. At this stage, the system remains weak and has not developed into a tropical storm. However, meteorologists explained that even a weak low pressure area can still affect the weather by increasing cloud cover and rainfall.

Weather experts also noted that December weather is usually influenced by the northeast monsoon or amihan. When combined with a low pressure area, the chances of rain become higher, especially in eastern sections of the country. PAGASA stressed that the system’s behavior may still change, depending on surrounding weather conditions.

Areas Expected to Be Affected

If the low pressure area enters PAR, several regions may experience cloudy skies and rain. Eastern Visayas and parts of Mindanao are among the areas expected to receive more frequent rain. Some areas in Luzon, including Metro Manila, may also see occasional showers, especially in the afternoon or evening.

Rainfall is expected to range from light to moderate, but heavy rain may occur at times if the system strengthens or interacts strongly with the monsoon. PAGASA also warned of possible rough sea conditions along eastern coastal areas, which could affect fishing and sea travel.

Why a Wet Christmas Is Possible

The possible arrival of the low pressure area close to Christmas has increased the likelihood of a Wet Christmas in different parts of the country.PAGASA explained that rainy weather during December is not unusual, but the presence of an additional weather system can make conditions wetter than normal.

Many Christmas activities in the Philippines involve travel, outdoor gatherings, and church events. Rainy weather could lead to delays, traffic problems, and cancellations of some plans. Low-lying areas may also face the risk of flooding if rain becomes persistent over several days.

Safety and Preparedness Reminders

Authorities are reminding the public to stay alert and prepared as the holiday approaches. Even if the low pressure area does not turn into a storm, its effects may still cause inconvenience and safety risks. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to clear drainage systems and monitor local advisories.

Travelers are encouraged to check weather updates before leaving for the provinces. Drivers should be cautious on wet roads, while passengers using sea transport should follow warnings from the coast guard and local authorities. Fisherfolk are also advised to avoid sailing if sea conditions become unsafe.

Possible Changes in the Forecast

PAGASA emphasized that weather systems can change quickly. The low pressure area may weaken, dissipate, or slightly intensify in the coming days. Meteorologists will continue to observe its movement and issue updated bulletins if needed.

In past years, similar low pressure areas during December caused rainy conditions without developing into strong storms. Still, PAGASA reminded the public that rainfall alone can already cause problems, especially during busy holiday periods.

Looking Ahead to the Holidays

While the possibility of a Wet Christmas may affect some plans, officials said that early preparation can reduce risks. Families are encouraged to remain flexible and focus on safety. Staying informed through official weather updates is important as Christmas weekend approaches.

As monitoring continues, PAGASA will provide regular advisories to guide the public. Updates on the low pressure area and its possible effects on holiday weather will continue to be followed and shared by Metro Balita Ph.
